How do the scores work?
Your goal is to minimize the word count and maximize the letter count. Since longer words tend to have fewer 1-letter "neighbors" in the dictionary, they're typically harder to think of, and harder to modify. Thus, a more robust vocabulary will be rewarded.

It's fine to use the "shrink and rebuild" method if you get stuck (it may even be the shortest path), but always go back and look for ways to increase the letter count. In other words, add or change letters first, when possible. Scores are compared in real time with all players globally. If your score is red, your solution needs work. If it's orange, you used one too many words. Yellow, your word count is good, but you need to increase the total letters. Green means you tied the current best solution. And if you see BLUE, congrats! You set a new world record. Archived scores will change color when someone else does even better. Good luck, and happy vocabulating!
[Distance] means what?
A number that represents single letter changes (and ignores the dictionary) can teach you a lot, once you learn how to use it. For instance, in a puzzle that begins with a 5-letter word and a distance of [5], try removing one letter. If you now see a [4], then you know you're dealing with a shorter word, because the removal was a step in the right direction. If the distance increases to [6], then you know it can't be shorter (a 4-letter word could be reached in 4 steps by changing every letter — remember, the math doesn't care if those changes make valid words). So you can be confident you're looking for a 6-letter word (or longer), because you need to change at least 4 letters, and insert 2. If the distance stays at [5], you at least know the letter you removed is not in the word (or not close enough to the right place), and it's likely a 5-letter word (or longer, if they share some letters). You might also try changing or inserting a letter. If the distance increases, then your new letter is not in that part of the word, or at all. (It may still help you get where you're going!) If the distance decreases, it was an appropriate change; try to keep it. If the distance stays the same, you can assume it doesn't belong in (that part of) the target. As you can imagine, just learning the length of the word, or the lack or presence of a single letter, can quickly rule out many potential target words. And remember, the puzzle will always be a phrase or term that's recognizable to [almost] everyone that speaks English. Happy extrapolating!

        It's a Camogram (the target is hidden). You'll have to guess the phrase and start changing letters. Pay close attention to the number on the right, which represents the current "distance" to the target word.

        IMPORTANT: "Distance" refers to literal (letter) changes; it does not consider whether a change would make a valid word. Use the distance value to figure out which letters are (or are not) in the target word.

        This puzzle is a Zygogram, which is made entirely of compound words. Instead of changing letters, you're dealing with word stems. Add, change, or remove any stem, as long as it's 3 letters or more, and the remaining word has at least two valid word stems.

        IMPORTANT: "Accidental" compounds are allowed! Example: "manage", which can be converted to package, mankind, micromanage, manageable, etc.

        ALSO: Some compounds have multiple sets of stems (hyper•tension & hyper•tens•ion, or sea•son•ally & season•ally). Time to put your thin•king cap on!
